I too, sing America(title)
I am the darker brother,
They sent me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh
And eat well,
and grow strong
Tomorrow I be at the table,
When company comes,
Nobody'll dare
say to me
'Eat in the kitchen"
then
Besides,
They''ll see how beautiful I am,
And be ashamed--
I too am America
From this poem, I can infer that the author is very confident and has pride with himself as through the sentence "They'll see how beautiful I am". He feeels he is being belittled by the people around him through the sentence"I am the darker brother" and "They sent me to work in the kitchen". However, he has faith with himself and claims that he will grow and become a good American, so that the people would not belittle him anymore and "see how beautiful I am, And be ashamed".
I love this poem as by the use of configurative language, it is able to portrayed what it meant. People are able to infer that the author is being belittled but soon he will try and strive to be outstanding until the people around him admires him, respect him and be ashamed that they had belittled him in the past. Presumably he wants to do his country proud, and has faith in himself that he will succeed. He wants to do himself and his counry proud at all cost, and would prove to the people around him that he is capable to do america proud.
